Before we dive to far into habits, I have to mention one of my favorite authors, James Clear, who wrote Atomic Habits. He addresses one problem when it comes to goals: winners and losers have the same goals, yet what differentiates the winners from the losers are the systems and habits that you have set in place.

“You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.” – James Clear

This is your reminder that the goal does not matter as much as the systems and habits that you’re building now to support those goals.

3 Simple Habits for Living a Called to Both Life

If you’ve been listening to this podcast and feeling Called to Both, I’m sharing three simple habits you can start implementing today to begin living a Called to Both life.

1. A Daily Journaling Habit

Over the last year, I really dug into building a daily journaling habit. I built this into my morning startup routine for work as a place to process my thoughts, feelings, and ideas. This wasn’t something I’d previously done consistently or felt that I had time to do, but I was doing it wrong. I would try to write something that sounded wonderful, that I could come back to—now I journal to never return to that page through stream of consciousness journaling.

Now, taking 15 minutes to journal has saved me time—for example some of my best ideas and processing comes from journaling. If you’re ready to give journaling a try, I highly recommend The Artist’s Way!

2. An End-of-the-Workday Wrap Up

The next habit you should incorporate to begin building a Called to Both life is an end-of-the-workday wrap up routine. This is simply a 15 minute routine at the end of your workday to create a separation between your work life and your personal life. Here are a few things I include in my own simple end-of-the-workday wrap up:

  • Physically clear off my desk.
  • Send final thoughts to team members.
  • Turn everything off.

This routine signals to my brain that we are done with work for the day.

3. Weekly Walks

The third simple habit that I’ve implemented is a weekly walk, inspired by Julia Cameron. Her book, Walking in this World, discusses this practice and how to use it in conjunction with daily journaling. While I commit to weekly walks, I’ve tried to make this part of a daily routine as well when the weather is nice.

This walking practice is wonderful for clearing the mind and having some of your best ideas come to you. It brings clarity through the subconscious. For me, this has been some of the best moments of ideation and creation. My recommendation is to create whitespace for you on these walks—don’t always be consuming content in this timeframe.

These simple, but highly impactful routines and habits will make such an impact in your life. What I love about the ones I’ve shared today is that you can make them your own and customize them to work for you in a way that allows you to stick to them and live a Called to Both life.
