Mid-Year Business Review Process

It’s so easy as a business owner to get caught up in the weeds of the day-to-day tasks in your business. A mid-year business review is important to metaphorically get off the ground floor and get on the roof of your building. This allows you to see the big picture of what you’re doing!

The more time you can set aside for this, the better, but I recommend 1.-2 hours for this process.

Here are a few things you’ll be looking at in your mid-year business review:

  • Where am I going in the big picture?
  • What’s happening in my marketing?
  • Are goals still in alignment?
  • Are there any big changes to consider?

Now, let’s review the phases of your mid-year business review.

The Gathering Phase

As you approach this review, it’s important that you gather all of the potential data and details that you will need for an efficient review. These items include:

  • Financial numbers of your business
  • Reference of content created and published over the last 6 months.
  • Yearly Goals
  • Mid-Year Review Questions

Having all of this will make it easy to review and save you time during your mid-year business review.

The Reflecting Phase

Next, you’ll head into the reflecting phase by taking a look at all of the data. As you’re looking at everything you’ve gathered, there are a few questions and prompts to consider that will guide you through decision making.

Mid-Year Review Questions & Prompts

  1. What has been working?
  2. When reflecting back on last 6 months, am I happy with my family/work rhythm?
  3. What has not been working?
  4. What has been the gross revenue over last 6 months and am I on track to hit my revenue goal this year? Why or why not?
  5. How can I diversify my revenue streams in the next few months?
  6. Write our your vision and mission for your business.
  7. What feels easy/light?
  8. List your business wins.
  9. What are issues and problems that are blocking you from where you want to go?
  10. What feels unnecessarily difficult in your business or your schedule?
  11. After looking at your goals for the year, are there any that you want to let go of, change, or add new?

Now that you’ve had a chance to review, take a quick break and let that knowledge soak in. This could mean going on a walk, grabbing a meal, enjoying a cup of coffee, etc. Once you’ve had a little break, come back in with fresh eyes for the future planning phase.

Future Planning Phase

This is where you’ll look at the next six months ahead. First things first, set the big projects in your business. Then mark off any important dates for business, personal, and travel to protect your dates. This allows you to see where you have room in your schedule.

Set your goals based on availability, then write out any updates for your team members, including wins, goals, where you’re at, or if you’re changing course.

Now that you’ve gone through each phase, you can jump into the projects in front of you. No matter when you listen to this episode, it’s never too late to do a review and planning session. Even doing this as an integrated life and business session is so valuable.
