Business Audit For Established Photographers
Whether you’re ready to scale, raise your prices, or simply stop working around the clock, this audit will help you identify what’s working, what’s not, and what needs to change to support your next-level growth.
These five categories cover the full ecosystem of your business—your income, your audience, your visibility, your offer clarity, and your systems. And I promise, this isn’t about doing more. It’s about doing better.
Step 1: Revenue Check
Where should you start? As much as you may not want to, you have to look at your numbers!
- What was your total revenue last year?
- Which offers or packages brought in the most income?
- Which ones underperformed—or were totally neglected?
Tracking this monthly (or at least quarterly) will give you a clearer picture of what’s actually contributing to your bottom line. It also helps you identify high-potential areas for growth.
Are you thinking of adding new income streams this year? I’ve got two podcast episodes just for you:
- Episode 121: Why Every Photographer Should Have Multiple Income Streams + How to Get Started
- Episide 160: The 3 Revenue Streams Every Creative Should Have in 2026 (Beyond Your Core Offer)
Smart business owners don’t just check their revenue; they use it to drive their strategy.
Step 2: Leads and Client Flow
Next, consider how people are finding you and how they are moving through your sales process. Ask yourself:
- How many inquiries did you get last month?
- Are you responding quickly and consistently?
- How many of those leads converted into paid clients?
Even the most beautiful offer won’t convert if your leads aren’t being nurtured. If your leads are ghosting you after that first inquiry, it’s time to tighten your process.
If you missed it, I went deeper on this in last week’s podcast episode and how to improve your responses and follow-ups.
Step 3: Content and Visibility
Let’s be honest: you’re not getting enough of the right leads if your content isn’t working. Take 10 minutes to write down:
- Where are you consistently showing up (Instagram, email, blog, etc.)?
- Which platforms bring in the most engagement or inquiries?
- Are you speaking to your ideal client—or the one from three years ago?
If you’re feeling stuck, check out:
- Episode 53: 10 Tips for Using Instagram Stories to Attract Clients and Grow Your Small Business
- Episode 131: 7 Content Ideas to Boost Your Visibility & Brand Authority
When your content evolves with your business, it attracts higher-quality leads—and helps you charge more, with less convincing.
Content drives connection, visibility, and sales. Don’t set it and forget it.
Step 4: Offer & Package Clarity
It’s time to evaluate your services and prices. When it comes to your offers, consider:
- Are my packages clearly defined and easy to understand?
- Do my prices support the revenue goal I want to hit this year?
- Are there too many choices? Too few?
Often, creatives set big financial goals, but their pricing structure can’t support them unless every client books the biggest package. That’s a recipe for burnout.
Clarity and simplicity sell. In fact, one of my clients reduced her five-package system down to three, raised her prices slightly, and saw an immediate increase in bookings. Less confusion. More conversions.
Confused clients don’t buy. By clarifying your offers, you create confidence in your work for you and them.
Step 5: Systems and Processes
Your systems and processes are the invisible backbone of your business. This is also one of the most overlooked items in most businesses. Your systems include:
- Your CRM (client relationship management, like HoneyBook or Dubsado)
- Your project management (like ClickUp, Asana, or Notion)
- Your templates, automations, and standard workflows
If you don’t have a solid process for onboarding clients, managing projects, and staying on top of tasks, it will always feel like you’re behind.
A few years ago, I spent just two hours setting up my email templates in HoneyBook. That one decision saved me countless hours over the following year. Set it up once, and benefit for months (or years) to come.
Your systems should save you time, energy, and decision fatigue. If they don’t, it’s time to upgrade.
Don’t Just Audit—Take Aligned Action
You don’t need to overhaul your entire business overnight. Just pick one area from this audit that you know needs your attention. Maybe it’s clarifying your packages, streamlining your systems, or finally owning your visibility online.
Then take action this week.
