My Journey with Youtube

When I first started my business, I was constantly watching Youtube videos to learn more about photography and the wedding industry. I found that there were some big gaps that I thought would be beneficial to photographers just starting out in the industry—this motivated me to start a Youtube channel of my own iin 2016.

It wasn’t until 2017 that I was actually consistent in my content and growing my Youtube channel. I was already an established full-time wedding photographer who was now consistent and loyal to my audience on Youtube. I decided to add a Facebook community to connect with my Youtube followers—called Photo Boss with Joy. Now that community sits at nearly 10,000 members.

Is A Youtube Channel the Next Step in Your Business?

I get asked all the time if a Youtube Channel is the right next step for business owners. With that, it’s followed by a lot of similar questions, so let’s take a look at some of the most commonly asked questions about Youtube for business owners.

Is Youtube Worth Your Time?

In my experience, Youtube is absolutely worth the time investment for your business. I’ve worked with a variety of different business owners, all who have found benefit in creating content on Youtube for their business.

Why Should I Start a Youtube Channel?

Content creation in your business is so important, whether that is in blogging or creating social media content. While you’re creating content, it’s also important to consider the preferences of audiences. Did you know that 80% of people would rather watch a video than read a blog post? Now this doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be blogging, but rather incorporating video into those blog posts.

Another important stat to consider is that “How To” searches are increasing 70% year over year on Youtube. This means you can increase your reach and visibility by offering these types of videos, especially when it relates to your business and services.

By starting a Youtube channel, you’re able to gain that visibility and authority within a free search platform. The content you’re then created will allow you to build that know, like, and trust factor with your audience.

An additional opportunity that Youtube creates is diversification in your revenue streams. After adding in Youtube, I was able to add a course and coaching that I could sell to my Youtube audience.

Is It Too Late to Start on Youtube?

While there are already a lot of people using Youtube, that doesn’t mean it’s too late for you! I truly believe that some of the creators and people that will become household names in the next few years haven’t even started their Youtube channels yet. You’re not too late.

It’s also okay to not become a household name on Youtube. You can have set goals that don’t include this and still find so much success on Youtube.

How to Use Youtube in Your Business

Youtube does take time and effort to build and grow. As an entrepreneur, you need to know how you’re going to use Youtube in your business to help you determine the way in which you’ll plan to grow. There are two ways that entrepreneurs can use Youtube directly in their business:

  1. Leveraging Youtube to build your authority by getting them into your sales funnels (my recommendation).
  2. Becoming a Youtuber with making money with ads and affiliates.

When you determine which way you’ll use it in your business, it’ll help you plan out your content and strategy!

How Long Does It Take to Create Content

Just like any other platform, Youtube takes time. Depending on your processes, the value your video offers, and what type of content you’re putting out there, this differs from creator to creator. Let me walk you through my own process.

  1. Start with an idea.
  2. Research some data points
  3. Outline the video.
  4. Film
  5. Edit
  6. Upload

All of these steps can take 2-4 hours for the most part. Other videos have been behind the scenes on a wedding day and taken 14 hours with everything I needed to film. Making Youtube video can be as complicated or simple as you want! If you only want to spend a short amount of time on these, you can outsource the editing and uploading. You can also go simple with your recordings.

Leveraging Youtube in Your Business

There are a variety of ways that you can leverage Youtube for your business and enrich what you’re already doing. Consider reviewing your analytics for your most popular blog posts or content pieces and turn it into a video and add it. You can send the videos out in your newsletters, add it to your about website, and use it in your social content.

What Gear Do I Need?

Gear can absolutely hold people back, but you don’t have to use the best of the best gear. If you want to get started with your webcam or iPhone, that’s absolutely fine. The one recommendation I have to to consider your sound—invest in a solid microphone.
