Resetting Your Mindset

Being able to reset your mindset sounds so much easier than it is. I’ve found three things that have really helped me to reset my mindset and start fresh: breathing, journaling, and adding good thoughts.

Breathing

About six months ago, I looked into breathing as a way to reset my mindset. When I first started, it felt silly. I’d never practiced anything like this but the studies on breathing and mind / body connection is amazing. That’s when I decided to try square breathing.

Square breathing is a breathing exercise where you break your breaths down into four, 4-second segments:

  • Breathe in slowly for four seconds
  • Hold for four seconds
  • Breathe out for four seconds
  • Hold for four seconds.

When you feel overwhelmed, you can do a few sets of square breathing to reset.

Journaling

Now, the second way that I’ve found to reset my mindset is through stream of consciousness journaling. Essentially, rather than journaling in the traditional sense, you write whatever comes to mind, without a sentence structure, and see what lands on the pages. In my own experience, journaling has brought out things I didn’t know I was dealing with—specifically limiting beliefs in my life and business. This has helped me overcome a lot of these beliefs.

If you’re intrigued by this concept, I was inspired by The Artist’s Way and highly recommend you read this book!

Add Good Things to Your Mind

Once you realize you have limiting beliefs, it’s so important that you’re replacing those with good thoughts by adding good things to your mind. There are a lot of work related things that come out in my journaling or even money mindsets. You can replace those with truths, affirmations, bible verses, messages, etc.

In Jon Acuff’s book Soundtracks, he calls these limiting beliefs Soundtracks. I love this term because it’s a looped track in your mind and you need to make sure you have good thoughts doing that.

Collecting Joyful Messages

If you need a resource for times when you’re feeling those limiting beliefs taking over, create a collection of joyful messages that you can reference.

Your Next Step

Once you’ve reset your mindset, consider doing good for someone else who may be in a funk. Reach out and encourage someone, compliment them, etc. This small act of kindness can do so much for someone else.
